German Shock Readings: Climate Interest Barometer Plummets

German public’s interest in climate protection dwindles.

The German website Climate Seeks Protection, supported by the German Ministry of the Environment, presents its quarterly Climate Barometer Report. It measures German public interest on the topics of climate protection, climate change, the energy situation and interest in related projects. Here’s how it looks:

German climate barometer: Index of public interest in climate protection

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. People reading this website and looking at opinion polls around the world know that the public is sick and tired of all the hype about so-called climate change.

They just want to be left alone. The same couldn’t be more true in Germany. The report states:

In the first quarter of 2010 the Index measuring public interest in the topic of climate protection dropped sharply from 110 to 68 point. This trend continued in the 2nd quarter as public interest in climate protection weakened further. The Index dropped from 68 points to 56 points.

The index is based on four indicators:
1. Expert assessments of public interest in climate protection and the level of demand for their expertise.
2. The number of media reports on climate protection, climate change and energy saving in the quarter.
3. Internet interest by the public by measuring the frequency of the search terms climate protection, climate changeand energy saving at Google .
4. The frequency that selected energy saving advisory bureaus for climate protection are used.

The Climate Seeks Protection website is a campaign supported by the German Ministry Of Environment.

Of course with the recent media bombardment of Russian heat and Pakistani rainfall over the last few weeks, expect the index to rise in the third quarter. But my feeling is that the public is only going to get even more sick and tired of “climate protection”.

I’m for starting a Climate Scepticism Barometer. Let’s just be sure we choose a scale that allows lots of room for increase.

Before I’d read your comments I wondered what the scale was. I imagined the Guardian headline “Public confidence in climate scientists falls from 110% to less than 60% after deniers push Climategate.” It would be consistent with alarmist statistics 😉

How can confidence be over 100%? isn’t this typical? The warmists are inflating the numbers again. 
Reply: It’s an index that’s not based on a scale of 100. I don’t know the details of how it’s calculated. All I know is that the patient looks pretty ill. -PG

“4. The frequency that selected energy saving advisory bureaus for climate protection are used.”

Government run mad. Lots of jobs to cull.

The idea that an interest in “Energy Savings” necessarily reflects an interest in “climate protection” is absurd, and is nothing more than an attempt to puff up their numbers.

    What can I say.
The AGW scare is pushed by alarmist crackpots like Prof. McPherson who abuse their position to sell their BS. The most staggering about his message is the complete absence of any ethical standards and a complete absence of any scientific proof to support his claims.

And there are many more where he came from.
