Veteran Meteorologist Joe Bastardi On NASA November Temperature: “A Fraudulent Report… Tampering With Data”

Joe Bastardi at his Saturday Summary here tells us what’s already known: The claim that November 2013 was the hottest month ever is fraudulent. He slams NASA and NOAA for picking data that solely suits an agenda.

At the 6-minute mark Bastardi shows the GISS temperature trend from 1999.

A clear cooling trend is shown…before alterations were made later. A few years later these alterations were made to show a slight warming. Bastardi writes: “They are tampering with data” […] November data “not even the warmest in four years.”

Bastardi shows two charts and asks: “Does this:

Bastardi 2013_12_21_sat

Look like this,” (from NOAA):

The NOAA claims the US was near normal, when in fact it was much colder.

Bastardi then goes on to say the USA has seen the biggest drop in temperature this year that it has ever had. The satellite data also show that temperatures for November were much cooler, see Saturday Summary video at the 9-minute mark. Joes asks: “Why doesn’t the media actually go look at what is going on here?”

Joe then reminds us that global sea ice is at the second highest level in the satellite era.

Near record sea ice hardly indicates record warmth.

All charts were cropped from Joe Bastardi’s Saturday Summary here.

The irony is overwhelming yet completely missed by you, it appears.

Pierre didn’t describe that well. The image he includes was from the 1999 GISS dataset for years 1930-1999, Steve was showing how the dataset adjusts data in that range over three later datasets, not picking a year for the start of a range. See http://stevengoddard.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/gissustampering1999-20132.gif from http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2013/12/21/thirteen-years-of-nasa-data-tampering-in-six-seconds/

GISS doesn’t, or at least didn’t, keep their monthly releases on hand, as every month their data correction software updates past missing data which makes it really hard to compare historical data over time.

Currently GISS shows nearly the same trend from 1980 to now as does RSS. So currently it nearly looks like a dataset, not like a sockpuppet. This might change at any given moment without notice, as Gavin Schmidt can make GISS do anything he wants to.

    Wait, there’s more.

“Bastardi shows two charts and asks: “Does this: [graph] Look like this,” (from NOAA): [graph]”

Well of course they do not look the same because they depict totally different things: one depicts Land & Ocean Percentiles for Nov 2013 (NOAA graph)
while the other Weatherbell produced graph shows Temperature Anomaly for Jan 2013 – 22 Dec 2013.

The fact that Bastardi has (conveniently?) altered the NOAA graph so that it does not show its full header (“Land & Ocean Percentiles Nov 2013”) coupled
with the fact that the Weatherbell graph he shows a screengrab of also omits a descriptive header (“Temperature (2-meter) Anomaly [ºC] 00Z01JAN2013 –> 00Z22DEC2013, Average”) leads me as a 24/7 skeptic to believe that both omissions were deliberate.

Had Bastardi really wanted to make a meaningfull comparison he should have used NOAA’s Temperature Anomaly graph which can be found here: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/service/global/map-blended-mntp/201311.gif . Note how it is surprisingly similar, particularly with regard to the US, to
Bastardi’s own Weatherbell graph. It certainly does not support the whole premise of this post nor of Bastardi’s video, that ‘NOAA/NASA is tampering with data’.

The only tampering with data is done by Bastardi himself and in a pretty deceiving manner.

LOL! Oh come on, if I have ever seen a probably paid troll on a paid mission it’s you.

      1. G Mitchell

        A paid troll? LOL

You visit way too many conspiracy sites, you’ve lost touch with reality.

{G Mitchel}: “Note how it is surprisingly similar, particularly with regard to the US, to Bastardi’s own Weatherbell graph.”

Frankly those two don’t really look “surprisingly similar” at all. Talk about grasping at straws. LOL!

      1. G Mitchell

So I take it you have not issue whatsoever with Bastardi (and Pierre) comparing two charts, not telling their audience they show two completely different things only to question why the hell they don’t look the same?

  3. Michael D Smith

Too bad Joe didn’t give credit to Steve Goddard for those charts! C’mon Joe!

    Here is my version:

(note that the data is actually from 12/15 on these analyses.

“Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”

Either NASA thinks that people did not know how to read thermometers until the 1980’s or they support the global warming agenda with all of its political social and economic implications.

TOBS and UHI adjustment? Please. If they really wanted to adjust for UHI they would adjust up past temperatures to reflect that more of the world is urbanized and suburbanized now than in the past.
