Berlin-based leftist daily TAZ here reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel isn’t going to bother attending the Ban Ki-Moon initiated climate conference in New York this coming September. The TAZ adds this has been “confirmed by a government spokesman“.
Moon personally invited all world leaders, asking them to attend with “ambition and responsibility” in order to lay the groundwork for the Paris 2015 climate conference where world leaders are to sign onto a binding agreement requiring industrialized countries to drastically cut back CO2 emissions by 2050, and thus serving as the successor agreement to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
The TAZ writes that even Presidents Barack Obama and Francois Hollande will be attending.
Merkel’s decision to snub the event is likely another sign that efforts to forge a climate agreement are already dead in water. The TAZ writes:
Ultimately only Europe and very few other countries remain on board. Canada for example has opted out. Japan and Russia are also no longer taking part.”
Merkel “burying global climate agreement”
According to the TAZ, Merkel will not be attending because of “scheduling reasons“, but added that Germany will be represented by “high-ranking” officials.
Activists groups are howling in response to Merkel’s snub. Germany’s leading global warming hysterical blog klimaretter here accuses Merkel of “burying the global climate agreement”.
Klimaretter adds that Brazil is expected to play a key role in facilitating an agreement but that the prospects of making progress look dim since negotiations suffered a huge setback in March:
The representatives of 28 EU countries postponed to October the decision on their mutual climate targets for 2030. That means: The EU will decide their new climate targets first after the Ban-Ki-Moon conference [New York]. This is a hefty setback for climate diplomacy: Of course the Brazilians aren’t going to be putting any suitable climate targets on the table when they do not even know what the Europeans have in their pockets.”

Since Angela Merkel would soon have been buried by the economic damage that the German Green policies have inflicted, she has moved first and buried the Greens and all their works.
It appears to me that Ban Ki-Moon and the rest of the climokleptomanics of the UN are trying to reposition the strategy and arguments about why the developed economies, especially the USA and Northern Europe, should hamstring their own societies and give the wealth to the UN to manage (waste) for the failed countries, tyrants, and all those climate refugees about to be bobbing around in the rapidly rising ocean – real soon now.
It is a crying shame what was done in the name of green/free energy (in my administration the cost of energy will skyrocket and coal plants will go bankrupt; BO-2008). The current leaders of Germany and Australia have noticed the problem with this – follow it and your economy falters and you get voted out of office. BO doesn’t have this problem because he can’t run again and he badly needs a legacy – everything else has tanked already.
Previous ‘government’ in Australia had a bloody good go at reducing us to an equivalent bankrupted EU state. We’ll be paying for their scorched economy policies for many years to come despite now having an adult government in place.

Not to criticize your comment; but you are making an interesting distinction: “The West” versus “failed countries”… Now… who’s really failing?
Look at US debt; look at Hollande’s approval rating…
And what are the “failed countries” doing? Buying up all the Gold…
And what’s Merkel doing? Looking east…

With the USA stealing, shifting and stalling even when it comes to Climate Change who can blame Angela Merkel for not turning up to hear Obama once again talk the talk but not commit the USA to walk the talk, in any way shape or form, even by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.
This event is a PR waste of time. Another COP15 that is doomed to failure.
