Coolest Central European September In Years…Heavy Snowfall Forecast For The Alps This Week!

Germany’s DWD national weather service has the preliminary September 2017 report out. According to the result of the data measured by the country’s 2000 weather stations, last month was cooler than normal.

September 2017 in Germany saw a mean temperature of 12.7°C, which was 4.2°C cooler than last year’s record warm September (16.9°C). This means that the month came in 0.8°C colder than the 1981-2010 mean.

September in Central Europe was also cloudier and wetter than normal. The cool, autumn-like weather was caused by low pressure systems pumping cool air from northern Europe.

The DWD also reports some regions in Germany saw frost, for example Deutschneudorf-Brüderwiese recorded a temperature -1,5 °C on the morning of September 19.

Austria sees coolest September in 10 years

Also Austria’s ZAMG national weather service reported that September in the mountainous country recorded the coldest September in 10 years, and that in the mountains it was even the coldest in over 15 years. The following ZAMG chart shows the country’s temperature anomaly from the mean:

Austria’s preliminary September data is based on measurements taken from 270 stations scattered across the country using SPARTACUS .

Austria’s September 2017 is summed up by the ZAMB in three words: cool, rainy and dreary. The mean temperature was 1.5°C below the long-term mean and was the coolest since 2007.

New snowfall records in Austria

ZAMG climatologist Alexander Orlik reported:

There were also some new record snowfalls. For example at the Villacher Alpe, 2140 meters above sea level, it was the the snowiest September since snowfall measurements began in 1925. Over the month some 78 cm of fresh snow fell.”

Cool weather, heavy snow forecast for early October

The colder temperatures are expected to continue through early October, according to Schneefan at climate and weather site wobleibtdieerderwaermiung.de here, citing meteociel. The following meteociel chart depicts the projection for October, 2017.

According to meteociel on September 28, cold weather is projected to dominate Central and Eastern Europe in October (850 hPa – approx. 1500 m). Source: www.meteociel.fr/modeles/cfsme_cartes.php

The US GFS also confirms this cool projection.

Heavy snowfall forecast for the Alps

Finally Schneefan writes that “heavy snowfall is forecast for the week ahead across Austria and Switzerland!”

This fall global warming is taking a big break, at least over much of Central Europe.

The USA has a few winter storm warnings

    E.G. …

    URGENT – WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
    National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO
    1052 AM MDT Sun Oct 1 2017

…Wintry weather coming to the northern Colorado mountains
    tonight and Monday…

TIMING…Rain and snow along with embedded thunderstorms will
continue this afternoon and become heavier through tonight. Snow
levels will lower to valley floors tonight. Precipitation
    should decrease by Monday evening.

    * SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…8 to 16 inches with locally higher
    amounts possible.

    * WIND/VISIBILITY…As low as one quarter mile during periods of
    heavy snow.

We’ve been working on trails out of Sunrise, Mt. Rainier (from 6,400 ft. to about 7,200) all summer. Today (Sunday), we assembled at 8:30 and worked to 11:30. Then we ate lunch, loaded all the tools and vacated the place for the season. Twas very much like winter up there.
Perhaps Colorado is in the path of that storm.
      Stay warm.

In the spam again…. you don’t like the link to a US .gov site?

This is great news- we are going skiing, in Austria, later this year.

And just for SebastianH – we will be driving a diesel car to the airport, flying to Austria and then driving from the airport, to the ski resort, by diesel car, before returning in the same manner.

Loooooooooooooove all that life-giving CO2 emissions!

      In diesel, not so much.
In sparkling wine and beer, much better.

    Thanks Pierre.
Hope you will give an update to this after October fades.
The various met folks do well out to 3-5 days and, often, then go off the rails.
    Stay warm.

The warmist problem is that climate scientists have made a basic mistake no competent engineer would make. CO2 CS has been greatly over-estimated (it’s the same as the 1979 Charney Report designed to create the new politics). Dissenters were kicked out of Academia and publications of dissenting papers banned. They then grabbed grants and promotions by pushing this fake science, the precursor of of fake news.

And as for the mistake; it’s to fail to understand that Max Planck’s 1913 treatise is based on an assumption of equilibrium between radiative emitters in a vacuum. The atmosphere is not a vacuum. This explains the details of OLR and means extra extinction coefficient for rain/convective clouds. NASA claims that is due to lots of small droplets when it’s large drops that create dark undersides, high albedo.

It creates 40% more radiative transfer in the atmosphere than reality. They then do a work-around using a big mistake in cloud physics – van der Hulst in1967, Hansen 1969. Thus they pretend rain and convective clouds are dark underneath – high albedo – is because droplets are small when it’s a large droplet phenomenon; ultimate scientific incompetence that was used as the basis for the NASA/IPCC fraud

Sorry folks but allegedly even Stephen Hawkins is involved in the scam and has been protected by colleagues for 25 years. Planck’s vacuum assumption is fine but prohibits the use of his theory for much of radiative energy transfer at the junction between a solid surface and a ghg-containing gas.

Myles Allen is escaping by blowing the whistle to survive the denouement of the incompetents.

      @ AlecM

Hadn’t heard of Myles Allen before. Surprising, too, as long as he’s been around (the following from 2013!).
      https://judithcurry.com/2013/05/26/myles-allen-why-were-wasting-billions-on-global-warming/

“Do I think we’re doomed to disastrous warming? Absolutely not. But do I think we are doomed if we persist in our current approach to climate policy? I’m afraid the answer is yes.” – Myles Alle

That’s been my sentiment for a long time. It seems so obvious, it’s hard to imagine more people not acknowledging it.

      Thanks…

      1. yonason

PS – Just one problem. He STILL thinks CO2 emissions are bad.

      2. AlecM

The key issue is that in addition to the two basic scientific mistakes the peculiar IR properties of water ensures that extra warming from CO2 is almost completely offset by low level clouds – a proportional part of the PID control system that ensures incredible stability of climate.

There is virtually no warming from extra GHGs like CO2 and CH4. The IPCC propaganda is fraudulent.

I have 125 yrs of daily rainfall around where I now live. There is no identifiable trend of more or less rain. However there are definite cycles which are associated with the SOI and the Pacific Ocean dipole. There is a cycle of around 11 years but of varying magnitude. Australia had a huge drought in what is called Federation years from about 1896 to about 1912. There was a dry period in Queensland which ended about 2009.
There were huge floods in 1893. There floods in 1974 and again 2011.
Climate models are not based on any scientific data or measurement. They include “black box” variables of which CO2 is one of the main ones but they leave out variations associated with the sun, ocean warming cycles, cloud formation and cycles of rainfall.
So-called climate scientists have no qualifications or experience in subjects like heat & mass transfer or fluid dynamics. They are ignorant people some of whom should be in jail for misappropiating public funds.
