Mother Of German Green Weeklies, Die Zeit, Shocks Readers…Now Casts Doubt On Global Warming!

After a foray in a cult, one of the first steps on the path back to reality is the process of deprogramming. Could it be that this step is now being self-administered by the German mainstream media? It appears so.

Now that the global mean temperature curve has drifted out of and below the IPCC’s projected range, panic is breaking out.

The mother of German green weeklies, Die Zeit, appears to be taking measurements at the back of the house in preparation for the installation of a back door! Rahmstorf is back there with them, trying to talk them out of it.

Leading lefty journalist Harald Martenstein of Die Zeit, a weekly that recently portrayed Marc Morano as the Don Corleone of the North American climate denial syndicate, has an amusingly satirical essay on the misfortunes of climate science and modeling: On the surprises of climate change. Hat/tip: klimazwiebel. If you can read German, his essay is a jewel in irony and humor to behold. Effective because few things convey a message better than music or humor.

Martenstein, once a devout believer of the global warming religion, apparently has been struggling to reconcile the glaring differences between climate expectations and hard reality.

Martenstein begins by first claiming he is not a climate skeptic, and tells the story of how he bought a house in the Uckermark in northeastern Germany because renowned scientists had been telling us that “the climate in Germany would be warmer. It would become similar to the Mediterranean.”

He then writes that former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, however, seemed to be unconcerned about the ominous hothouse-Europe climate projections, and went on to purchase a vacation home down south in Turkey. Martenstein seemed baffled by Schröder’s decision, writing, “I was ready to open my home to the Schröders as soon as they would no longer be able to take the 60°C heat in the shade. But instead it got colder and colder. In the Uckermark in the wintertime it was -20°C for weeks.”

Martenstein also noticed that Britain had endured its coldest winter in 30 years, Florida got covered by icicles, and the cold seemed to be spreading everywhere. So he pleaded that people should emit more CO2 – so that he could stay warm.

His plea, however, prompted an invitation from a “scientist at a very nice climate institute“:

He showed me tables and graphs that clearly depicted it was getting warmer. He believed that I was just a victim of my own subjective imagination. Memory can fool you. One thinks that during childhood it was warm from May to September, but in reality its was warm only 3 days, and it is those 3 days that one remembers intensively. The tables from climate scientists, on the other hand, do not lie.”

Martenstein then recounts the past winter and how it seemed to him as being the longest and hardest he could remember, but telling himself that it was probably just his warped subjectivity acting up again. He writes:

But suddenly I read in the paper that a number of climate scientists had changed their minds. Now they were saying it is not going to get warmer, but colder, at least in Europe. Whatever happened to the tables, I ask myself.”

This kind of science would never fly in biology or physics, Martenstein writes. “But with climate science it seems they are allowed to get away with everything.”

Today it has dawned on Martenstein that Schröder had been wise to buy a vacation home in Turkey, where at least the summers are warm. He ends his piece:

The polar bears are not dying off, no. They are moving to Uckermark. I’m not a climate skeptic, I’m just disappointed.”

Thanks for the wonderful humor, Herr Martenstein. Overall, however, the climate story is a sad and embarrassing one for the field of science and humanity.

Half of the commenters attack him because of his subjectivity which of course is very unscientific; the other half proclaims that mistakes in science serve to improve understanding.

So we have two stages of grief: Anger, and Bargaining.

Burning the climate models should keep the place warm for a while.

At least he can dream of warm weather while sipping a piña colada in his conservatory on the Uckermark under dreary summer skies. As long as the Russinas don’t turn off the gas for heating.

When the sun goes quiet as it has done for the past few years there is no backup heat to come out of the ocean and save us from the inevitable cold. The simple reason is that surface tension prevents heat from entering water from above.
A competent child can demonstrate this. All you need to do is fire heat at the surface of water and observe that the heat is rejected. There is a little bit more to it than this but that can be explained if anybody is interested.
The irony of the situation is that the only way to get heat into water from above is to float a pot or some such on the surface and apply the heat through the floating. That is the whole story of AGW, it just doesn’t exist.

There are those who warned from Day One against according such extreme-reactionary Luddite sociopaths any credibility.

Acting from ill-will, in bad faith under false pretenses, Klimat Kultists’ truly vicious sabotage of global coal-oil-nuclear economies has condemed untold tens-of-millions to impoverishment, misery, even frigid death.

Layman or cognoscenti, no individual with critical faculties intact accommodates Warmists’ anti-human agitprop a moment. Massive fraud clothed in ridiculous pseudo-scientific jargon is their sole stock-in-trade. Rene Blondlot, J.B. Rhine, Trofim Lysenko, Immanuel Velikovsky, have nothing on the Green Gang of Briffa, Hansen, Jones, Mann,Trenberth and their ilk.

Anyone not familiar with these names should review decades of proctocratic screeds by Paul Ehrlich, John Holdren, Keith Farnish, Kentti Linkola, Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber. How these coprophagic sycophants fastened on Big Government to siphon off tens-of-billions in grant monies is major question.

Thanks for the humour Mr. Martenstein. Wise decision. It may help you keep your job.

The forcings are becoming better known all the time, and it’s becoming more, and more clear that the solar forcings are much greater, at the expense of the CO2 forcings.

Anyone who still continues to push CO2 as a major driver of climate does so either out of ignorance, or has an ulterior motive, monetary and political being very common.

Notice the left-wing habit of blaming somebody else for your own mistakes, a human failing elevated to the ultimate excuse by the left. The first intellectual has broken ranks. The first politician will surely follow, then the scientists will become scapegoats for what the politicians asked the scientists to give them – a road to absolute power. That’s the way it worked for the bankers, that’s the way it will work for the climastrologists.

I would like to point out that I am a skeptic and I distance myself from the foolish statement made by Robert Barclay. He is a denier and there is a big difference. I am sure that most skeptics would agree that his statements are complete rubbish and we need to say so if we wish to gain any respect.

    1. geronimo

Fred, I’m a sceptic and I’m sceptical of Robert Barclay’s statement. If he wants to pursue a theory that I don’t agree with then I’ll wait for his work to be published. If it isn’t he’s wrong, at least for the time being, if it is and passes scrutiny he’s right. Either way there’s no need to hate him, or call him a denier.

    2. David, UK

“Denier” my arse. Go away [-snip].

    3. Bruce of Newcastle

I’d be a little more open minded all around. If climate sensitivity expressed as 2XCO2 is anything less than the Arrhenius value of about 1.2 C then CO2 is basically harmless.

Arguing whether it is 0.0 C/doubling or Lindzen’s 0.7 C/doubling is a dispute about the number of angels who can fit on the head of a pin. Either way if you do the arithmetic there is no possibility of CAGW.

For the record I go with Lindzen as my own calcs come up with the same number by a different method.

Well, there IS something weird going on when you fire an IR photon into water…

    @Lloyd Martin Hendaye: unfair!
Blondlot was acting in good faith & undone by his own incredible gullibility (& promptly unmasked & a laughing stock for the rest of his life: you can’t but feel sorry for the guy). Rhine was fooled by his own statistical ineptitude & never caused any harm (except for generating oodles of rotten SF burbling about “mutants”). Velikovski was your run-of-the-mill crackpot who pushed the attempt to prove the Bible literally right a bit further than most “creation scientists”. Also a laughing stock from the start.

Lyssenko, on the other hand…The guy did MASSIVE damage to Russian agriculture, & he caused hundreds of fellow scientists to die in the GULag (everybody who believed in evolution, or “Weissmannism” [the Soviet term] or who was tortured into confessing in it). So far, the Hansens & Manns have only been able to dream of achieving that.

In answer to fred and geronimo, what I am putting forward is no theory. Try heating water from above and if you manage to get any heat into the water I’ll apologise and disappear but surface tension will frustrate you. What I’m putting forward explains everything that is going on including Trenberth’s missing heat.

    1. Mike Jonas

Robert Barclay – I haven’t done your experiment, and I have no reason to doubt it, but the mechanism you are looking at isn’t the only possible one. I’ll suggest another, and there may be more:- Extra CO2 in the atmosphere intercepts more IR than before thus raising the air temperature, then when rain falls it is warmer than before, and that extra heat is carried into the ocean.

      1. DirkH

Mike, under Local Thermal Equilibrium CO2 must re-emit as much IR as it intercepts (Kirchhoff’s Law). Therefore it is generally accepted even under serious warmists that CO2 does not “trap heat” as is often promulgated by journalists; but SCATTERS the IR flux that is around.

        More about that here:
        http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/08/05/co2-heats-the-atmosphere-a-counter-view/

        1. DirkH

…and the “enhanced CO2 GHG effect” does not come about because CO2 “traps more heat” but only through pressure broadening of absorption lines – the edges of the absorption lines where the absorption is not saturated become slightly more saturated, thus a few more IR frequencies undergo the scattering than without the increased CO2 concentration. And it is this scattering of a few MORE photons that allegedly leads to catastrophic warming in the long run… The atmosphere, so to speak, becomes slightly less transparent for these few frequencies.

        2. DirkH

…which brings me to an interesting thought. I Mentioned Pollack’s research and the effect of charge separation in water surfaces when a 10 micrometer (or similar) IR photon enters the water. Pollack emphasizes that the energy from the photon does not predominantly serve to heat the water but to build up the charge separation.

So what happens to those IR photons that hit water droplets, i.e. clouds? They must serve to build up charge separation in each individual water droplet, making it charged negatively (I think) on the outside and positively on the inside of the charge separation layer.

This in turn explains why water droplets keep a distance from each other. So, how much IR from the surface is converted intro electrical charge and internal order by clouds and vanishes from the “heat balance sheet”? I’ve never seen that effect mentioned.

    2. Fred Colbourne

      To Robert Barclay:

Get an infrared lamp like the ones they use for heat therapy.
      Get a bowl of water
Let the water reach room temperature
Suspend the lamp a foot over a tank of water, aim it at the water and turn it on
      Leave for an hour
      Measure the temperature again

Main problem is that the IR will directly heat the bowl.
I leave it to you to design a way to measure the increase in evaporation

      1. DirkH

No, the IR photons will not make it beyond the skin layer of a few micrometers. Water is intransparent to IR.

        1. Bernd Felsche

Temperature in the bulk of water will remain near-enough constant. The volume of liquid water will have reduced due to evaporation accelerated by the energy provided by the lamp.

I observe a similar phenomenon in the morning in the bathroom… the water puddles on the floor remain cold until the water has evaporated, even under the IR lamps.

One of the things that really bugs me is that most people don’t seem to be sufficiently engaged with reality to notice such things and then try to explain it on a “theoretical” basis.

“Martenstein begins by first claiming he is not a climate skeptic…”

“Climate skeptic” – Interesting word usage by Herr Martenstein. Why not claim he is not a climate ‘denier’?

Will all former true believers in CAGW equally utilize the phrase “climate skeptic” in place of climate denier when defining themselves as what they are ‘not’ before moving on to offer their journalistic self-cleansing declaration; ‘the devil made me do it’?

    Regardless – Gemütlichkeit Herr Martenstein!

“This same practice of Lysenkoism has long been under way in western science in regard to the politically correct theory of man caused, catastrophic, global warming. That theory serves the political fashions of the day in promoting vastly increased government powers and control over the private economy. Advocates of the theory are lionized in the dominant Democrat party controlled media in the U.S., and in leftist controlled media in other countries. Critics of the theory are denounced as “deniers,” and even still bourgeois fascists, with their motives impugned.

Those who promote the theory are favored with billions from government grants and neo-Marxist environmentalist largesse, and official recognition and award. Faked and tampered data and evidence has arisen in favor of the politically correct theory. Is not man-caused, catastrophic global warming now the only theory allowed to be taught in schools in the West?”

    ..and how about this?
“Lysenkoism was “politically correct” (a term invented by Lenin)…”

“Die Zeit”, mother of German green weeklies? You must be joking? The columns of Martenstein are intended to make its readers laugh. Nobody takes serious what this guy writes. How did you dig this out anyway?

Are you guys so desperately looking for support?
