Critics Call German Elitist Reaction To Trump Victory: “A High Altitude Flight By Arrogance And Disdain”

Today just a few comments on Trump’s spectacular victory.

Don’t let the title above mislead you. The overwhelming majority of the German media were shocked and infuriated by Trump’s against-all-odds victory. Indeed if Germans had cast their votes in the US election, Hillary would have won by a margin of something like 94 – 6.  That’s how disgustingly one-sided the press here is.

Yet, there are a few journalists/commentators who had the courage to express the harsh, politically incorrect truth of the US election result.

What follow are some examples of non-conforming reaction to Trump’s spectacular victory.

“hate-filled arrogance”

Roger Köppel of the Swiss Weltwoche here writes:

I can understand that some reject Trump and criticize his positions. But what really annoyed me was the hate-filled arrogance coming from fat-cat elites who with great certainty believe that it is a sort of blasphemy whenever someone stands up and challenges their claim to power.”

He summarizes:

The arrogant political cartel, which Trump was fighting, experienced a staggering defeat.”

“High altitude flight of arrogance and disdain!

Henryk M. Broder (right) commented at national daily Die Welt here, where he described how he started the election evening by attending a ritzy election party in Berlin, wholly occupied by Hillary supporters, pundits and elitists of every type. Outside he couldn’t help notice a huge, white stretch-limousine parked outside waiting to ferry guests to the next stop for celebrating a Clinton victory. Broder titled his commentary:

A high altitude flight by arrogance and disdain.”

He writes that he too was convinced Clinton would win. After all: “So many intelligent people in one single spot just couldn’t possibly be wrong.” When the result became clear, Broder says he couldn’t help feeling “a bit of Schadenfreude“. He summarizes:

What do we learn from this? The political elites, starting with the think tanks and ending with the top of the EU, have no clue about the USA. They know where to find the best margaritas in New York, the best spare ribs in Washington and the best tacos in Los Angeles, yet they do not understand America.”

“Collapsed expectations”

At Germany’s flagship political daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung here, journalist Frank Lübberding writes how expectations by Germany’s elitist media collapsed before their very eyes. To explain Trump’s voter base, charts and figures from ARD moderator Jörg Schönenborn were used to clearly show that Trump’s message resonated “only with white men who had little education“. Schönenborn insisted at the beginning of the evening: “Hillary Clinton’s chances are much greater.”

Lübberding then writes that in the ARD studio in Cologne there was only a pro-Clinton audience – and one single “Never-Trump” republican. That was the overall atmosphere. Only the Clinton perspective was presented.

Lübberding then describes the atmosphere of shock and stun that spread across the pro-Clinton ARD studio as the results came to show that Trump would roll to victory. What happened? To explain, Lübbermann cites data presented in the studio from Virgina:

In Virginia white women with college degrees voted as often for Trump as they did for his opponent. That Trump appealed to white uneducated men, a claim that pollsters often heard during the campaign was impressively refuted on that evening.

The picture in reality was nothing what the German media elitists and think tanks believed it had been.

“Shock therapy” for the elitist class

Finally, chief editor Markus Somm at the Swiss Basler Zeitung writes how the elitists have in fact become “trapped by the ideology of privilege” and that anyone who views things differently, or suffers under the elitits, is “berated or ignored“. In talk shows guests who maintain other views are almost excluded. And when they are invited, they are hugely outnumbered so that a pile-on results.

Somm calls the result of the election “shock therapy” for the elitists, and he issues a dire warning for Europe:

What happened in the USA, where a totally non-tested outsider succeeded in capturing the highest office, this is only the beginning. Many countries in the West will soon experience something similar. A revolutionary mood has taken over. […] It is hardly a coincidence. Switzerland, Great Britain, Netherlands, the USA: these are countries that are among the oldest democracies of the West. The more mature and established the democratic traditions are, the more the people’s resistance comes to surface, and thus the more the elitists tremble.”

They didn’t just misread Trump. They are also trapped in an urban bubble, oblivious to those in the hinterland who have been left behind.

Crows are pretty smart. I hear a lot of them are flying to Red states.

The oligarchy might try to blame the Trump/brexit people for the coming global destabilization.

So as Hillary has not been forthcoming with a comment explaining why *she* lost the election, I’ll have to recycle her old comment —

“Hillary why did you lose the election?”

Hillary:”What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again.”

“Do you feel that your attitude of “what difference does it make”, surely a redefinition of “the ends justifies the means”, caused the Democratic party election collapse?”

Hillary:”What difference,a-at this point does it m-make? It is our job to figure out what happened to me again, f-figure out what, w-wh-what happened to me again, m-m-m-m-me a-again.”

    “Thank-you Hillary. Good-bye.”

Hi from Oz. Yes, the silent Right has spoken. Yes, other countries will follow. But that is just the beginning.
All these countries, even Switzerland, have to fix their financial systems which have been damaged by the Left. This is the next, and far greater challenge, IMO.

  7. John F. Hultquist

There are many stupid statements about Trump but the one that I’ll comment on is this:
    totally non-tested

He was raised in NYC, graduated from Wharton, married (3x), 5 kids, major developer, 70 years old, and so on.

I’ll guess he has been tested (even bested a few times). Pundits and elitists seem to be clueless about the real world.

sorry, but we have had experiences with fascists and many Germans have learned a lesson.

P.S. – I didn’t deal with Putin, because as a Jew I like him. He’s undone a lot of the harm that’s been done to us, and shown himself to be anything but an anti-Semite.

The reason I added Chavez is because he was a far Left Commie freak who destroyed Venezuela. He’s of the same totalitarian cloth as Erdogan, as are those who approve of him, as did the American Democrats.

If you are anti-Trump, you are a part of the problem.

And BTW sod. Your beloved leader Obama has never figured out a way to fight ISIS – who allegedly throws gays off rooftops. Mean people claim it’s because the Obama regime is supporting them or at least is perfectly happy to have terrorists fight Assad.

So. Why not try something different. Let’s see how long ISIS lasts now that your beloved leader Obama is gone. Let’s see whether the mighty USA with their satellites and warplanes and hellfire missiles finally finds a way to wipe out a few ragheads in a desert. Shall we? Or maybe just lets Putin finish the job, shall we?

Trump is no fascist, he is though a US nationalist.
He appears not to be in the National Socialist Dictator mold either, as to be that he would have to be a politically left-wing, economically third-way redistributive and demand cherry-picking industries for government control.
Oh yes, and utterly crazy like the son of Alois Schicklgruber.

In modern times most fascists are of the Left-wing. Fascism and left fascism are sociological and philosophical terms used to categorize perceived tendencies in extreme left-wing politics otherwise commonly attributed to the ideology of Fascism.
See more left-wing murdering dictators look-up:-
Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, Kim Il-sung, Chun Doo Hwan, Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-un, Joseph Stalin, Mátyás Rákosi, Josip Broz Tito, Antonín Novotný, Enver Hoxha, Nicolae Ceauşescu, Fidel Castro, etc.

An do not forget the left wing wannabees
Baader-Meinhof Group (renamed Red Army Faction, defunct as of 1998) (Germany)
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)
      Red Brigades (Italy)
      Revolutionary Struggle (Greece)
      Shining Path (Peru)
      Weather Underground Organization (United States)
Communist Party of India (Maoist) and Naxalites

Yes the so called socialist side of the political spectrum is certainly the more dangerous.

      1. sod

anti-communism is a defining part of fascism. Your “definition” of the term does not make any sense at all.

        1. yonason

Sadly, the thought processes of modern Leftists aren’t able to grasp the simplicity that would stare them in the face, if they even bothered to do any actual research into the subject.
          http://ray-dox.blogspot.com/2006/08/this-article-is-published-on-internet.html

NAZI stands for National SOCIALIST Workers Party.
CCCP stands for Union Of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics.

And, if you take a close look at Mussolini, you’ll see he was a SOCIALIST as well.
          http://jonjayray.tripod.com/musso.html

They were all essentially the same at their core, differing only in the means by which they sought to impose their will on others.

          1. sod

“NAZI stands for National SOCIALIST Workers Party.”

no, it does not. you have the name of the party wrong.

NAZI is a term used for wingnut right extremists. the name of the party was NSDAP.

As we see at the moment, right wing extremists are abusing the poor by pretending to work for them. So the use of the term “socialists” has basically no meaning when used for them.

under the “NAZI regime” we saw some “social policies”, but most of them would not be accepted as such today.

            https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sozialpolitik_im_Nationalsozialismus

Drafting soldiers in preperation of a war for example is not a “social policy” to reduce the number of jobless.

Neither would discrimination against non-germans and women be seen as social policy today.

          2. yonason

Nationalsozialist = NATIONAL SOCIALIST = NAZI = Member of NSDAP

So, your objection is a distinction without a difference.

They were SOCIALISTS, meaning that they were LEFT WING.

Their “social policy” always involves central control of economies, and because free people don’t want central control, they need to be controlled as well, and that requires state police. They always fail, so they have to blame others, so they invariably need an army to go to war with those “others” responsible for their failure, and to pilfer their wealth to make up for what they themselves can’t produce. If they are too weak to steal from others, they descend into poverty, like Venezuela.

They are not builders. They are destroyers. ALWAYS.

          3. sod

“Nationalsozialist = NATIONAL SOCIALIST = NAZI = Member of NSDAP”

you have that equation totally wrong.

NSDAP: a party with the term “socialist” in its name. NATIONAL SOCIALIST: a member/supporter of that party.
NAZI: a short for a member/supporter of that party at that time, but has a DIFFERENT meaning now (as the party does not exist any longer!!!)

THE NSDAP was about as “socialist” as the C partys (CDU/CSU) are “christian” today. It is a label, like the term “strawberry” on a joghurt, that contains at best micro portions of the fruit.

We just saw the right supremacists use the NAZI salute in the US, and they support Trump. We did not see this at the Bernie sanders rallies and they do not support that “socialists”.

          4. DirkH

“We just saw the right supremacists use the NAZI salute in the US, and they support Trump.”

      1. sod

“You really are a BAD LOSER, sop…. ”

No. You are the bad loser. Your “winner” trump declared before the election, that he would not accept the result. He made up stuff (voter fraud) that does not exist at all, to excuse his possible loss even before the election.

Now he won the electoral college by a small margin in a couple of states but lost the popular vote. And that only after significant action by a rogue FBI boss. He has seriously pissed of the majority of Americans and they will hit back hard.

        1. Analitik

sod, Hillary won New York and California by about 4 million votes so across the rest of the 50 states, Trump won by 3.6 million. The electoral college system was set up to prevent the most populous states dominating the election results over the rest of the country.

Get over it. Accept it. Grow up.

Your overall “popular vote” metric is cherry picking . But I guess we shouldn’t be surprised by this.

          1. The Indomitable Snowman, Ph.D.

It’s also a useful time to remember that in the recently-completed World Series, the Cubs won the series four games to three, but the Indians actually scored more runs. Funny, I haven’t seen Indians fans rioting in Cleveland to demand that the title be given to the Indians, by trying to change the rules after-the-fact so that the Indians won the WS by 28-26 (I think that’s what it was).

The objective is win individual games, not score the most overall runs in the Series.

And that leads to something else as to why it’s disingenuous (at best) to try to make the claims that are being made. Everything is run – and occurs – based on the state-by-state electoral college system. The way the campaigning is done is based on this (e.g., nobody bothered to campaign in places like California). Further, voting patterns are based on the underlying rules; it’s a fact of electoral life over here that Libertarian Party election numbers are inflated by what are otherwise Republican voters in hopelessly-blue states (and regions) – who, if the rules going in were national-popular, wouldn’t vote that way. It’s the same with turnout – e.g., if you live in a hopelessly, top-to-bottom blue enclave (again, much of California is like this), the incentive to turn out is virtually nil.

Funny thing from the House map. While the idea of secession from the Union has always been somewhat comic-opera (at least since the 1860s), there are more serious intra-state secession movements and have been for some time; these usually are based on the more rural regions of a number of states being annoyed about being neglected by state governments that are de facto run of, by, and for the urban population center(s). They never get anywhere largely because the state legislature would have to approve such a move – and they aren’t going to let otherwise-captive taxpayers walk.

However, if the screaming ninnies actually *do* get a secession movement going somewhere, then things could get, um, interesting on that basis. Look at the map for Oregon – where there are Portland ninnies trying to get a secession bill going in the state legislature. That’s unlikely to get beyond catharsis – but if it were to happen, then you’d have the rest of the state demanding that they be allowed to secede from Oregon and remain in the Union. That federalizes at least that part of the issue.

Interested non-US readers might want to go look at how West Virginia came to be. (That it occurred in 1864 should make it easy to figure out.)

Now WHAT is your REAL problem, Leftist?
          a) That Trump is a fascist who just destroyed the West (as Jakob Augstein so eloquently determines.) (and will destroy the Earth in a nuclear inferno, as others have predicted)
          b) That he buys a pound of meat and brands it a “Trump Steak”?

Come on boy. Even you should be able to figure out SOME priorities.

            CONVOLUTED AND CONFUSED

“I am really shocked that so many people were unable to see this. While they think trump will work for them, he is already trying to sell Trump steaks to the white house and the US Army.” – sod 12. November 2016 at 10:14 PM

So I post a link that shows he has nothing to sell, and now Trumps is a “liar,” when all he could have meant is “these things are so good I wish they had my name on them.” or some such.

Besides, a “Trump steak” is like an “Air Jordan” sneaker (though hopefully better tasting). sod has no clue that this happens all the time, where someone pays you to put your name on their product to boost it’s sales. He/she/it/whatever (those are the only pronouns I intend to learn) has no clue what “marketing” is.

Must be really desperate to nitpick about such trivial things, while remaining willfully blind to real evil.

“That he buys a pound of meat and brands it a “Trump Steak”?”

that is not what happened. Trump was attacked in the primary. He was told that his steak business was a failure (it was, it was cancelled and feed back was pretty negative).

            https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/hey-trump-wheres-the-beef-trump-steaks-are-so-rare-we-cant-even-find-one/2016/03/22/175b682a-ebc3-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html

So Trump took some random steaks and made the claim, that they were “Trump steaks”.

For some utterly absurd reason, many people find this sort of lying acceptable.

“Indeed if Germans had cast their votes in the US election, Hillary would have won by a margin of something like 94 – 6.”

That is likely MSM/pollster desinformation again. An online poll by a Würzburg newspaper achieved Trump 53 to 47 Hillary.

The shock to the political caste in Germany is because they ACTUALLY think we ARE monsters. That is their mental model of us.

They also DO think we WANT the planet to perish in a modest warming because their mental model tells them that a modest warming IS a catastrophy and that anyone who WANTS to allow that to happen MUST be a monster.

If sod or David A are reading, full disclosure: I do not think any warming will happen from here and even if we did get a 2 deg C warming that would just enable us to grow pomegranates in Germany like we did in the MWP. Yes, there is a movement in many nations buoyed by resentment against the PC elites, but don’t expect those elites to change the way they do things as a result. Trump is going to find it very tough to make headway, just as the brexiteers, of whom I am one, are going to find it very difficult to make it stick against the power of the European Union.

And despite all his bluster, I am not convinced Trump is really principled enough to resist making an accommodation with the incumbent powers to make the difference that we wish to see. Expect a serious watering-down of his climate scepticism.

Willis Eschenbach over at WUWT, ever alert as he is, made a short post pointing out that, although the US election was 50/50 in the nation as a whole, in Washington DC H. Clinton took 93 percent of the vote. Repeat – 93 percent. Trump got 4 percent. That is just astounding. What a gulf has opened up between the ruling class and the people! And it is not unreasonable to point out that a liberal-green majority of similar magnitude would be found across the whole scientific establishment and, most importantly perhaps, the educational establishment, with all the power of indoctrination that it wields.

The Democrats arguably threw the election to protect themselves from a Clinton Presidency which would have destroyed them and America.

Clinton blames Comey’s late intervention, which is correct – he clearly followed orders to knock Clinton’s momentum into touch. The unspoken part of this is voter fraud, but biased in favour of Trump so he just squeezed in.

OK, this is conspiracy la-la land, but the next move, to assassinate Trump, just like Kennedy, will be to restore Globalist control via Pence, and with it mad Merkel’s mass immigration and 30 years of European civil war.

Same here in Holland / Kingdom of the Netherlands / aka the 17th Bundesland .
Dozens and dozens of channels have been bashing Trump for months and have been looking away from the crimes of the Clinton clan and their Court.
Not a shred of objectivity except for a few populair rightwing internet sites, magazines.
Clinton was always ahead in the fake polls that they cited but they never once asked themselves here, like in the US ,why does Clinton have a 1.000 man at a rally once or twice a week and Trump has 10/20 thousand even 3 times a day ?

The local elites that populate the Media, the Parliament were completely uninformed about what was happening and stunned , and were even crying.

Trump will not do anything aside from removing the obstructions to justice that are currently in place. 17. Mervyn

The world has seen the ‘Brexiteers’ celebrating, now the ‘Trumpeteers’ are celebrating, and joining them soon after January 20, 2017 will be the ‘Climateers’ celebrating.

And I say, God bless Donald Trump.

  18. sod

Let me explain, why i think that the Trump presidency will fail. I will use an example from german politics to illustrate my point.

The 2009 elections brought a win for the conservative party and a coalition with the economic liberalism FDP party under Guido Westerwelle.

    https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guido_Westerwelle#Wahlerfolg_2009_und_Folgen

They had run on big promises and had not wasted too much time on figuring out, how to govern well. Basically there plan was to get into government, and they thought the rest would be a cakewalk. it was not.
So the FDP failed misserably afterwards and was basically eliminated from most state parliaments afterwards, a decline that is only starting to end now.

Most illustrating is, what happened at the foreign ministry, which Westerwelle took over. People there simply did not accept him and were really happy, after Steinmeier from the SPD took over again in 2013 (return to reason).

So where is the similarity to Trump? Trump is running on an extremist agenda. He has made bold claims and basically has no plans. Now he is filling important positions with really incompetent people.

So if you look at the EPA for example, the resistance will be very strong. Trump is coming in with extreme positions, which also are not supported by facts. The scientists at EPA will fight back against such nonsense.

In short: extreme positions, which are also stupid and introduced by incompetent people will have a low chance of success in even the intermediate time frame.

    1. AndyG55

Well sop, you would certainly know about failure.

Your whole life is based on failing and being wrong.

    2. tom0mason

      sod,
      You said —
“So if you look at the EPA for example, the resistance will be very strong. Trump is coming in with extreme positions, which also are not supported by facts. The scientists at EPA will fight back against such nonsense. ”

You fail to understand the US system of government. When a new administration comes in they can at a whim change out all the non-permanent (contract)staff and reallocate the permanent civil service employees. They can also set, reset, and alter any agency budget and therefore staffing levels as per their policy.
The President also gets to appoint a huge number of Government Agency heads of staff, Military appointees, and just about anyone in the diplomatic position.

Also note Under the Hatch Act of 1939, civil servants are not allowed to engage in political activities while performing their duties — to do so is illegal! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatch_Act_of_1939

If, as your theories implies, EPA staffers would attempt to oppose the Presidents, then I foresee a lot of ‘gardening leave’ happening prior to many early retirements.

    In short again:

if the leader of the free world is constantly rated at 3 or 4 Pinocchios, he will not succeed.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/11/15/trumps-claim-that-two-million-or-three-million-criminal-aliens-are-here-illegally/

    1. AndyG55

sop is rated at 20+ Pinocchios.

Or is it just that everything he says is just WRONG, WRONG, WRONG

      1. Analitik

sod doesn’t lie – he doesn’t have the intelligence to grasp that the green/red left have manipulated him to become a puppet for mouthing their inanities.

Hillary Clinton, OTH, needs a crutch to keep her nose off the deck with Barack Obama not far behind

    2. tom0mason

      Sod.
      Trump won!
      Clinton is the loser!

      Who’s the denier now?

      1. sod

what are you talking about ? i am not denying that trump won the electoral college.

        1. AndyG55

          CLEAN SWEEP 🙂

          All levels of the government..

So funny watching the far-left scum bubbling to the surface.. and watching sop get even more confused and desperate with his lies and carrying on.

        2. tom0mason

You appear to be in denial over the result like some crybaby who has lost their toys.

Clinton lost get over it. You know nothing of Trump’s policies, you are just rumor-mongering for effect. Sorry but the effect this far has show that you understand nothing about American politics and even less about the social sentiment of the many disparate US citizens that feel left out of the process. Clinton offered these people nothing, so they voted for the man who directly voiced some understanding of their plight.

Sod, grow up — Clinton is a LOSER!

No, I’m sure it’s 3% so that 97% wouldn’t have. Cook’s constant abounds in climate science circles.

      D. Appell.

      Trump won!
      Clinton is the loser!

      Who’s the denier now?

Trumps transition team has no ethics code at all. Obama had the strongest ever.

    1. AndyG55

      WaPo as your reference..

      ROFLMAO !!

Poor sop… sinking into the mire of far-left gullibility !!

You puppet strings are making you look absolutely hilarious. 🙂

    2. AndyG55

      Merkel, next to go. 🙂

      Obama? Ethics?

      hahahahahahahahahah

And I thought sod had no sense of humor.

    4. yonason

Oh, and about Hillary’s “ethics” – she hasn’t any, either.

Sod said “Trumps transition team has no ethics code at all. Obama had the strongest ever. ”
The primary representative here of the gi’me, gi’me, gi’me generation has spoken!

    6. tom0mason

      Sod,
Your comments here on this thread prove that you understand very little about Americans and American system of government.
Why then should anyone take seriously your protestation about “Trumps transition team has no ethics code at all. Obama had the strongest ever. ” when you have so little credibility on the subject?

      1. yonason

Serious, indeed. And this is just a broad overview of what we know.

sop has basically ZERO CREDIBILITY on any subject

A parrot could do better than he does. !

we now know, that the wikileaks data came from Russia.

    http://theweek.com/speedreads/662246/nsa-chief-openly-accuses-nation-state-using-wikileaks-tip-presidential-election

Funny, the CIA decided to only tell us AFTER the election, while Comey decided to make false accusations directly BEFORE the election.

It is really funny to read comments here.

Just imagine, things were the other way round: a foreign power interferring for Clinton, Clinton winning, while losing the popular vote, a leak about Trump from the highest ranking FBI official in the week before the election.

We would have had gun battles in the street after the election results.

But instead, the environmental movement is simply organising peaceful resistance against Trumps fight against facts and reality and for racism.

Your BIASED use of FAR_LEFT propaganda newspapers is becoming quite funny

Do try again with some REAL information.

  23. sod

Diplomats are already staying in Trump Hotels to buy favors with the future president:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/capitalbusiness/2016/11/18/9da9c572-ad18-11e6-977a-1030f822fc35_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_trumphotel-915pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory#comments

The corruption will increase massively in a Trump presidency.

    1. Analitik

Oh yeah. After all the cost layers, Trump will gain a few thousand if what you assert is true.

Contrast this to all the millions paid into The Clinton Foundation that Bill, Hillary and Chelsea are able to use directly.

Keep it up sod, just keep it up.
