New Study: Coral Reefs Thrive Near Acidic Waters (pH ~6.0) Where Seafloor Vents Emit Up To 95,000 ppm CO2

Though it’s believed the 130 ppm increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration since 1750 has caused the ocean waters to “acidify”, on a daily basis 50-380°C metallic acid enriched by CO2 concentrations reaching 60,000 to 95,000 ppm pours through seafloor vents. Nearby coral reefs “thrive” in these high-CO2 conditions.

50 times more CO2 in the oceans than in the atmosphere

Though many believe humans are “acidifying” the oceans by burning fossil fuels and emitting CO2, the ability of humans to impact the oceanic CO2 concentration is already compromised by the observation that the ocean waters contain about 50 times more CO2 (38,000 vs. 750 PgC) than the atmosphere does (North et al., 2014).

The oceans’ main CO2 source

What’s the source for the oceans’ much higher CO2 concentrations?

On a daily basis, “numerous” volcanic eruptions with “astounding values” of liquid CO2 pour through the oceanic seafloor.

The temperature of the acid spewing into the ocean reaches 103°C to 380°C (Kelley, 2017).

How much CO2 is spewed into the ocean by seafloor volcanism?

Mid-ocean ridge volcanism is the “key contributor” to the CO2 flux from the Earth’s mantle to the sea surface.

It has previously been observed that the acid pouring into the abyssal ocean from seafloor volcanism may contain about 9,000 to 57,000 ppm CO2 concentrations (Helo et al., 2011).

A new study of a “bubbling CO2 hotspot”

But even 57,000 ppm CO2 concentrations may be an underestimate.

Scientists have found groundwater reaching temperatures of 50-55°C bubbling up from seafloor with CO2 concentrations ranging from 60,000 to 95,000 ppm (Cardenas et al., 2020).

These extremely high CO2 concentrations are associated with nearby pH values of below or slightly above 6.0. This means ocean “acidification” is occurring in these locations.

Nonetheless, nearby coral reef communities not only occupy these waters, they “thrive” in these warm, CO2-rich conditions.

None of these observations support the narrative that says human CO2 emissions are driving the “acidification” of the oceans.

Instead, it would appear nature provides its own internal variability without more than an even modest assist from humans.

And with the oceans holding 50x the CO2 that the atmosphere has, just shows the madness of attempting to ‘decarbonize’ the atmosphere through any Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) methods. Henrey’s Law rules, etc…
Effectively you’ll be trying to pump all the CO2 out of the oceans.

Nature controls the CO2 levels between the oceans and atmosphere, NOT humans.

Nature controls the levels of carbon dioxide between oceans and the atmosphere, while the influence of humans does not appear significantly because they do not control the levels and effects of carbon dioxide as nature does and therefore man does not directly affect the carbon levels between the oceans and the atmosphere . These are powerful natural phenomena that man can’t influence.

Just some reality here. The oceans are basic in pH, and have been for millenia regardless of much higher Co2 concentrations in the atmosphere.

Its also well known that calcium and carbon dioxide interact very well in the aqueous medium.

Al Gore claimed that crabs lose their shells in highly acidic water and actually did an experiment using hydrochloric acid to demonstrate this. However, we are not pouring millions of tonnes of HCl into the oceans. When the experiment was repeated using Co2 bubbling through the tank the crabs shells were BIGGER than before.

So much for crabs losing their shells.

We need to call out this stupidity for what it is.

The geese are flying north. Snow geese spotted in two waves, about one thousand, just a wag. There were two Sandhill cranes flying with them. Three minutes later, there were seven or so Whooping cranes following the flock. The Whoopers do a weaving pattern while flying way to hell and gone up there.

The geese and cranes exhaling CO2 as they fly at those altitudes means carbon dioxide will enter the atmosphere naturally from birds in flight.

Nobody can control that unless you kill them all.

In any event, it was a sight to see. Doesn’t happen every day.

Self-isolation has its benefits, social distancing is for the birds too, ya know. The snow geese fly at an altitude of 3500-4000 feet, far away from anybody. They know how to self-quarantine.

Coral can grow as much as it wants. If the coral has an affinity to grow where there is 95,000 ppm of CO2, what difference does it make?

We’ve known about these vents for centuries, and now, we have just figured out the results. Amazing !?!? Ask your selves what happens if these ‘vents’ also fart SO2 gas or NO2 gas ???? Hmmm. We have better things to worry about, like volcanoes, earth quakes, asteroids, sea bottom vents, far left radicals, commies, marxist, socialist, fascist, ….. You get my drift.
