New Study Reports New York City Is Sinking…But Sea Level Rise Keeps Defying Alarmist Projections

In New York City, as the rest of the world, alarming rates of accelerated sea level rise continue to…not happen.

In 1986, Dr. James Hansen, the Godfather of global warming alarmism, claimed Earth’s temperature would rise by about 4°F between 1986 and 2010.

That didn’t happen.

In 1988 Hansen predicted that within 20 years (2008), New York City’s West Side Highway would be underwater due to rising seas.

That didn’t happen.

According to a new study (Boretti, 2020), the rates of sea level rise along the coasts of New York City are modest, at best: 0.7 to 1.0 millimeters per year (mm/yr) with just 0.008 mm/yr² acceleration.

The factor affecting New York City’s relative sea level the most is subsidence, which amounts to -2 to 3 mm/yr.

The lack of significant sea level rise or acceleration not only applies to New York City, but to the rest of the world.

Dr. Boretti reports that the Earth’s long-tem tide gauges show sea levels are rising at a pace of just 0.3 mm/yr on average and that “there has been no detectable acceleration in the rate of sea-level rise” in the last century.

So although “climate models predict that rising CO2 levels should cause an accelerated sea-level rise,” this, thus far, hasn’t happened.

Sea level rise from melting ice following the last glacial advance is well documented. [search for ‘post glacial sea level rise” images]
A key concept now is that the “Easy Ice” melted long ago. That is, ice at lower Latitudes, lower elevations, and susceptible to rain (erosive for ice) has mostly been gone for about 7,000 years.
Mountain glaciers do experience ablation (“retreat”), and growth, with long term weather changes. There is not much ice relative to the land ice of 20,000 years ago, so sea level is not much affected by these weather episodes.

New York City is on a very solid geologic province compared to many others parts of the world; mega-cities like Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, and in numerous other coastal agglomerations. Houston TX is another. Flooding in the NYC Region is an issue of building on low coastal places, not modern sea level rise.

New York on the Hudson,if I remember was founded by Dutch settlers used to low lying land, and when I saw it in 1966 the water was just about 2 feet below the street level still. Large buildings had been constructed along the waterside That would argue that builders of real estate in New York were fools. Whatever real estate developers are, they are not fools ! IMHO
So what I assumed was that the Hudson had not risen much since they were built .Have the buildings fallen into the Hudson since I saw them?

Can you please talk more about subsidence or at least provide posts on how it gets sidelined.

It might not have happened yet, but it’s going to. You mark my words. (And Pippi’s.) We’re doomed.

Bob Reiss, a journalist who originated this quote, later said that Hansen had originally told him that it was a 40 year time frame, and with the caveat “if co2 doubles (why?, surely CO2 rules, not calendar date). Anyway Reiss was interviewed by Salon in 1998,and” misremembered” the time as 20years and the credulous hacks at Salon printed that East River Highway would be a shipping lane in 2008. So Hansen’s original prognostication was a bit less sensational so that’s ok then, interesting though that. A convoluted explanation for sure but true all the same. Interesting that Salon were expecting this deluge in 10years and didn’t think to question it, similarly Reiss was breezily expected the same, you’d sorta expect them to have a better apprehension of impending doom.
Anyhow, 2028 is only 8years away, do we see any signs of the original prediction coming to pass? My guess is that Hansen will wriggle out of this one with some crap about it only being a scenario.
