January Mean Temps In Northern Europe Stall, Top Climate Scientist Concedes: Cold Waves “More Frequent” Ahead

Data show the month of January has been cooling across the northern hemisphere over the recent decades as winters make a comeback.

German research news site Forschung und Lehre here reports how climate researcher Professor Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute concedes: “cold waves like the one currently occurring in Europe may become more frequent.”

Rahmstorf reversal

This is quite a reversal when we consider that many climate alarmist scientists like Rahmstorf warned two decades ago that snow would be a thing of the past. Yet Rahmstorf’s step back to reality ends there, as he still blames the cold bitter winter weather on warming.

Swiss expert: just “ordinary winter weather”

Even climate warmist, veteran meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann thinks Rahmstorf is way off the mark, commenting as follows on his Twitter channel: “You don’t know which is more horrible and unscrupulous: all the right-wingers who see one winter weather situation as an argument against the climate crisis, or the desperately unscientific @rahmstorf, who now also attributes an ordinary winter weather situation to climate change.”

Cooling northern Europe January

Today we look at January mean temperatures in the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland. Surprisingly, as we will see, they are not cooperating with the claims of warming.

Cooling January in Finland

Using untampered data from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), we examine 6 stations in Finland for which we have sufficient data to plot back over 3 decades:

Data: JMA.

All six stations examined in Finland show a clear cooling trends for mean January temperatures. Little wonder Prof. Rahmstorf has to concede winter is far from being gone and thus some explanation is needed as to why things aren’t getting warmer in the winter.

January in Sweden is cooling

Next we look at January mean temperatures for Sweden at stations where the JMA has sufficient data to allow plotting back 3 decades:

Data: JMA

Here as well all five stations show the month of January has been cooling over the past 33 years. No wonder snow and ice aren’t becoming a thing of the past. Quite to the contrary as Prof. Rahmstorf now concedes. But the cooling is due to the warming, he insists!

Norway also showing no signs of warming in January

Next we look at Norway, Scandinavia’s most western country. Examined here are 11 stations:

Data: JMA

In Norway, 9 of the 11 stations examined showed no warming, or even cooling. Yet, Norway’s coldest station showed a strong warming trend. Perhaps Prof. Rahmstorf will claim that this supports his fantasy-rich theory of a warmer Arctic at times is supercooling the middle latitudes in the wintertime.

Overall, January in Norway hasn’t warmed in over three decades.

Sea ice extent has Hudson’s Bay froze over, the River Thames froze, and here there was going to be no more snow and the Arctic Ocean would be ice-free.

    Maybe next summer.

The low temp for tonight is going to be -39°F and will tie the record set in 1936.

The high temp for the day was -14°F, so it is bitterly cold and overnight low temps are in record territory for the region. The low last night was -28°F.

Winter weather can be a war of all against all. Old Man Winter is not as kindhearted, just not fair to endure the misery of such cold.

Extremely dangerous weather if you are exposed to the elements even for a short period of time.

Hard to believe it can be that cold, you are taken aback.

You stay inside to remain safe and warm.

When all this warming malarkey kicked off in the early 90s (that long ago!!), there was some Russian climate guy who said that we should enjoy whatever warm weather we were getting, because from 2020 we would be looking back at these balmy years with misty-eyed nostalgia as we drifted into a mini ice-age.

Yes. Khabibullo Abdussamatov. I mentioned him just today. If I remember, to paraphrase, “after 2020 it (the cold shift) will become more obvious.”

Another excellent job Kirye! Dumbfound the AGW dullards with data!
So if Northern Europe is not seeing the ‘global warming’ signal, where is? I thought the IPCC said ‘global warming’ would affect all areas of the planet.

As the small global temperature rise of the mid 1980s to the early 2000s dissipates so too should people’s unfounded belief in the mythical ‘global warming’.

Well, about 4am, several hundred thousand mail-in warm temperature observations will arrive, and thus the “data” (sic) will show that the enwarmening continues unabated…

Thank you Kirye for great data work!

It could be interesting to look at temperature data from wine growing regions in Europe, as some producers are claiming that harvest are getting earlier and that grapes are riper with higher sugars due to warmer temperatures. There was an article here in 2017 but that data stopped in 2000.
