University Of Wisconsin Antarctica South Pole Station Sets New Record Low: -100.8°F…Media AWOL

According to the University of Wisconsin, Madison here, on June 11, 2012, the South Pole Station measured a new record low temperature.

The mercury dropped to -73.8°C/-100.8°F, breaking the previous minimum temperature record of -73.3°C/-99.9°F set in 1966.

Must be because of global warming!

Yes, warming causes cooling, according to the UN, WWF, other scammers.

  2. Peter

It was a daily record, not an all-time record.

    Thats certainly a bit Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…….. isn’t it? :^O

    That is just unimaginably cold.

Hey dude, where’s my Global Warming?

Not an all time low for Antarctica though…

In other news: UPI doesn’t know the difference between energy and electricity.
“Marloes Caduff of the Institute of Environmental Engineering in Zurich and colleagues point out that wind power is an increasingly popular source of electricity, now providing almost 2 percent of global energy and likely to create 10 percent of worldwide electrical power by 2020.”

Maybe marloes Caduff doesn’t know either; but I would guess it was the UPI hack who botched it.

    Thinkprogress dutifully repeats it.

He’s a journalist by education. Like our EU Climate Commissioner.

        I think I see a pattern.

          You do see a pattern.

    Are we to take it,

that this [-73.8°C/-100.8°F] recorded Temperature was measured at the actual ‘South Pole’ – or at another ‘station’?

There are lots to choose from PG, have a look:http://amrc.ssec.wisc.edu/aws/index.php

Anyway, that’s a pretty cool pole – still, it’s some way to go to ‘absolute zero’ some ……… atmosphere – huh?

    😉

The coldest natural temperature ever recorded on Earth was −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) at the Russian Vostok Station in Antarctica on 21 July 1983. (Wikipedia)

Warmistas are falling as ripe apples from the tree. After Lovelock also John Cook has gone down. In the mean time a new IPCC publication scandal (Forest) is in the making. See Bishop Hill.

(SarcOn)”IPCC NEWS RELEASE- GLOBAL WARMING HAS ONCE AGAIN BEEN CONFIRMED WITH THE RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE RECENTLY RECORDED AT THE SOUTH POLE. THIS LOW TEMPERATURE IS A PREDICTED AND EXPECTED CONSEQUENCE OF GLOBAL WARMING. COOLING IN AUSTRALIA, COOLING IN EUROPE, COOLING ACROSS THE SEVEN SEAS ARE ALL CONSEQUENCES OF GLOBAL WARMING. THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL HAS ASKED THE SECURITY COUNCIL TO CONVENE IN ORDER TO INCREASE DUES CONTRIBUTIONS BY ALL MEMBER NATIONS TO 500% OF CURRENT LEVELS INORDER TO DEVELOP AND PURCHASE “NEW AGE”, “POST MODERN” NUCLEAR HEATERS FOR ANTARTICA AND THE NORTH POLE, THESE WILL –WHEN INSTALLED, TESTED, AND PUT INTO OPERATION– REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING 0.0003C PER DECADE THIS CENTURY. THIS RELEASE WAS APPROVED BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL. THAT IS ALL. MORE TO FOLLOW. POC- Pacman, UN Ext.666″(SarcOff)

That is not a record cold temperature for Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. It has been much colder on many occasions, with the present record set on June 23, 1982 of -82.8 C (-117.0 F).
The record high was set on Christmas Day last year of -12.3 C (9.9 F) and was on Fox news.

I followed the source links the wikipedia gives under their table for “South Pole” temps.

      I find these.

      http://www.coolantarctica.com/Antarctica%20fact%20file/antarctica%20environment/climate_weather.php
      http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=90098&refer=&units=metric

None of them indicates temperature for the South pole station itself as low as you say. I don’t know what the wikipedia people have falsified or miscategorized there.

Please give a reliable source. wikipedia does not consider itself a reliable source. Not wanting to mock you, but it looks like the table is somehow botched.

      1. DirkH

Ah sorry; I misinterpreted one of the sources as F instead of C, and here’s another of the wikipedia’s sources (“18” on their page) confiming the -82 C temp:
