Protesting Warmth? Greta’s Home, Sweden, Is 3°C COLDER Today Than Nearly All Of The Last 9000 Years

Greta Thunberg lives in Sweden. According to peer-reviewed science, Sweden was at least 3°C warmer than it is today about 6000 to 9000 years ago, when CO2 concentrations lingered around 265 ppm. At 410 ppm CO2, 21st century Sweden is colder now than almost any time in the last 9000 years.

A Much Warmer Northern Hemisphere

During the Medieval Warm Period, wine vineyards flourished in Scandinavia and Russia at the same latitude (55°N) where polar bears roam today.

Earlier in the Holocene, when CO2 levels hovered around 260 ppm, vast forests extended all the way up to the coasts of the Arctic Ocean (Russia), suggesting temperatures were up to 7°C warmer than today (MacDonald et al., 2000).

The limits of Arctic sea ice (north of Greenland) extended 1000 kilometers further north of where sea ice extends to today (2007), as Arctic Ocean temperatures were 2-4°C warmer about 8500 to 6000 years ago (Funder et al., 2011).

Throughout the Northern Hemisphere (Austria, Canada, Iceland, Russia), summer air temperatures were about 3° to 5°C warmer than today between 10,000 and 8000 years ago, when CO2 values held steady at 260 ppm (Ilyashuk et al., 2011).

Greta Thunberg’s Sweden: Colder As CO2 Rises

Greta Thunberg has been warning the world about the dangerous warming consequences of the modern rise in CO2 concentrations.

And yet despite CO2 levels rising from 260 ppm to 410 ppm since the Early Holocene, the country where she resides has continued to record nearly the coldest temperatures of the last 9000 years.

For example, permafrost that exists today in northern Sweden wasn’t present just a few hundred years ago, as the region was too warm to support permafrost until recent centuries (Sannel et al., 2018).

Tree trunk remains located 600 to 700 meters atop the limits of today’s barren mountain treelines (northern Sweden) date to the Early Holocene, suggesting (with the lapse rate) temperatures were 3-4°C  warmer than today from about 9000 to 6000 years ago (Kullman, 2018).

There are many proxy reconstructions that show modern Sweden’s temperatures are either the coldest or nearly the coldest of the last 9000 years. They also suggest most of the Holocene was 3°C to 4°C warmer than today for this region (Antonsson and Seppä, 2007Bigler e tal., 2002, Bigler et al., 2006Borzenkova et al., 2015, Grudd, 2008).

Does Greta Know?

These scientific conclusions affirming a much warmer Northern Hemisphere and Sweden do not support the poplularized  position that climate change is a manifest consequence of a dangerous rise in CO2 emissions.

Greta Thunberg likely hasn’t been made aware of this science; it undermines the narrative the adults around her have been pushing.

    Does Greta know?

Greta knows nothing. She’s just a brainwashed, uneducated, stupid kid who’s being manipulated by her unscrupulous parents, who should be sued for child abuse.

Thanks for this great utility service. Obviously, Greta Thunberg has no single clue about such “hard science”, this poor girl is being shamelessly manipulated by her unscrupulous parents and their still more unscrupulous handlers. I pity for her, who is being really robbed of her present as a normal teenager, not her future, by those people.

It would appear Miss Dumberg has gone to far.

“Yesterday Boris Palmer, 47, a prominent figure in the German Green party and the mayor of the university city of Tübingen, said he was worried that her movement was becoming “radicalised” and urged her followers to ignore her call to “panic” about the climate.”

    Radicalised eh???

When the climate inevitably turns colder, the same cast of characters will be the first to blame it on humans and demand money.

      Yes indeed.

The green profiteers are entirely lacking in sincerity about their apocalyptic claims; if the world were indeed in danger of perishing within the usual deadlines, much more rapid action would be called for – but the green establishment merely wants to keep the people moderately alarmed so that they can be more easily manipulated.

The moment groups of people of high visibility and strong potential impact take action of a radicality commensurate with the alarmists’ apocalyptic claims, the establishment is in danger to lose control, needing to suppress this radicalism.

The accelerating fanaticism of late uncovers the hypocrisy of mainstream alarmism, which is essentially of a vicarious nature.

But as soon as people are personally affected by “global warming”, say, by a state of psychotic discomfort or because a wind mill suddenly casts its shadow over their house, the slumbering citizens/vicarious global warmers wake up from their cosy green dreams becoming furious opponents of the scam.

I’ve said it time and again, the average alarmist is not alarmed in the least bit, nor does she care about the subject (global warming), she just wants to be part of a politically correct crowd which places her in the envious position of not having to think for herself while at the same time being an automatic winner in terms of moral status and social acceptance – it’s hard to get closer to possession of absolute truth.

      It’s so rewarding to be a Mitläufer ( a hanger-one).

I meant to write “enviable”, not “envious”.

“Sweden is 3°C COLDER today than nearly all of the last 9000 years!”

    Almost right.

Apart from two cold spells lasting around 200 y each, for the entire early to mid-Holocene (roughly 9,000 – 5,000 y ago), the entire Temperate Northern Hemisphere was at least as warm (and probably warmer) than it is today.

Up till a few decades ago, this terrestrial climate was referred to as the Holocene Climate (Climatic) Optimum. Today it is supposed to portend Climate Armageddon!

We do not know what caused the two distinct cold spells, referred to as the Misox and Piora Oscillations, respectively. Perhaps they were cyclic, perhaps a combination of intersecting cycles, perhaps more, e.g., asteroids, meteorites, volcanoes. But a cold dip would be devastating.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide – Kenneth Richard, wreaking yet more devastation on warmist narratives and those who spin them. Kudos!

    The fraud is obvious.
But it is fun to follow how bias is cheating us.
MOSAIC with RS Polarstern is close to the ice.
1 knot of speed last night-where no ice is on the map!
Something is false, the map or the sea ice?

Oden, another ship in Artic ice, had a captain that stated worse ice than ever seen before in the expedition 2018 on his long experience .

I am sure that the people of Sweden would prefer a colder winter and a shorter growing season. However, the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero so decreasing CO2 in our atmosphere will not make it any colder. All it would do is decrease agricultural productivity.

    Slightly Aside…

What does the name Greta mean?

Greta is a German or Swedish pet form (nickname) of Margaret.

It originated in Germany and means pearl.

    it is not a pets name, ok! [that’s debatable}

its greek and it means pearl (…)
the name Greta, is orginated in Greece and means: pearl

And what is the chemical composition of a pearl? Calcium CARBONATE.

Yes, that’s correct. She wants to eliminate CO2 from the environment, without which the very thing she was named for would not exist. If that isn’t the essence of a “death wish,” I don’t know what is. Very poetic, in a tragic sense. Makes great poetry, but lousy outcomes for those living it.
